Millstreet is home to the Green Glens Arena, a large venue arena now world-famous for its important equestrian events, and is busy throughout the year hosting many events. Previous events have included the Millstreet International Horse Show, the Millstreet Grand Prix, September Horse Fair, National Dairy Show, The Self Build Exhibition, and the Spring Farm Machinery Show. The Millstreet International Horse Show 2014 was held 12th through 17th August 2014. It is Ireland’s largest equestrian event and the only CSI (Concours de Saut International) to be held here. The FEI European Championships for ponies was held 29th July – 3rd August 2014.
For horse racing enthusiasts, the Cork Racecourse Mallow is located approximately 30km to the east, with regularly scheduled racing events.
For golfers, north cork is home to several magnificent and challenging world class golf courses such as the Macroom Golf Club and Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. Information about Irish golf courses can be found at Worldgolf.
For hill walkers, north Cork has some of the most spectacular and rugged terrain in Ireland, including the highest peaks in Ireland and the only Irish peaks that are over 1000 meters high. MacGillycuddy’s Reeks are a short drive to the west from Millstreet near Killarney. To the south and east lie the Caha and Derrynasagart Mountains, and to the north lie the Dunkerrons. There are numerous excellent walks near Killarney, which has been called the “Walking Mecca of Ireland.” The Kenmare Walking Club organises various walks during the year.
